  13. This effect usually results from:
  14.  
  15. A.  A path which makes your tfm directory invisible or unreadable.
  16.     (What is actually in your environments at the time you try to load
  17.      plain.tex?)
  18.  
  19. B.  Lack of read or directory permissions on your tfm files as viewed
  20.     from the directory where you are trying to do the load.
  21.  
  22. C.  Some artifact of optimization in the compilation of TeX (rarer, but
  23.     not unknown.
  24.  
  25. Since you clearly have the tfms somewhere, or you could not have run
  26. tftopl, try using an absolute path to initex while in the directory
  27. where the tfms reside.  If initex works there, you can either move the
  28. resultant dumped format to $TEXMFROOT/ini or figure out just where
  29. your path or permissions have gone wrong.  If initex doesn't work
  30. the chances are there is something wrong with the compilation.  
  31. (Be absolutely sure that . (current working directory) is available
  32. in all relevant paths, and remember that tex.pool has to be accessible.)
